Edit Disciple ![]() | President Obama
First off I'd like to say, I don't agree politically with Obama, but as President of the U.S he needs our prayers and support more than anyone. No he may not be a perfect president, or the one you supported. Yet still, as a leader of the entire country we must intercede in prayer for him. Some say he is the anti christ, remember brethren, the anti-christ will not be revealed untill the time is right. Now don't take any of this the wrong way, but remeber God told us to obey the laws of the land. Last edited by JesusIsHardCore; 06-04-2009 at 07:49 PM. |

most definitely! just because we don't agree with him doesn't mean we shouldn't pray for him! besides, it says in the Bible to pray for those with authority: 1 Timothy 2:1-2: "I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all Godliness and holiness."

The Biblical mandate is to Obey God primarily, and then the authority that is placed over you. If the laws of the land begin to contradict God's laws, then God's laws are what needs followed. Of course, this doesn't mean to go around looking for things that contradict God's laws in order to deliberately break them. I think we first need to work around the laws, and then - if the laws become too much of an issue - disobedience is acceptable. |

I know exactly what you're talking about.... In 1 Peter 2:13-17 it talks about respecting the authority of those above you and the officials appointed by that same authority.... and in Titus 3:1 it says basically the same thing. Ah HA! Colossians 2:10 "So you also are complete in your union with Christ, who is head over every ruler and authority" NLT That's not all though, I remember it being more clear somewhere else... I'll have to keep looking. But this basically sums it up. You have two guys, one is the boss of the other. The subordinate, who is your superior, tells you to do something. Then you remember HIS boss telling you something to the contrary once. Who do you listen to? Your bosses boss! Jesus Christ! Now to keep looking... I believe in Romans it expounds a bit more on this, not sure though.

Early in the book of Acts, I believe it is Peter who says, "I would rather obey God than man." There are also instances in Acts where this very thing is shown; Paul being lowered out of the city illegally in a basket, for instance. Or, when God broke them out of jail. These things were certainly illegal, but God called for them to obey Him rather than the law. But, they didn't go around looking for laws to break in the name of Jesus. |

I agree Zipster. God has called us to obey to the best of our abilities. He has placed these authorities over us much the same as the government places officials over us. When these officials, police for example, tell us to do something, unless it blatently and negatively goes against the law we do it. When one of those in power over us steps out of the bounds of law, we are called to correct them. Not rejoice because we can now do the same thing, for we can't. When the government goes directly against God's law, the same applies. We obey the laws that are placed over us to the best of our ability. I am of the opinion that the verse that says good deeds are to be performed in the dark applies here. Obeying God is a good deed, is it not? Therefore, when breaking the flawed laws of man is a good deed, should we not do our best to break them in silent and in sadness that they need to be broken? And always, as ToGodBeTheGlory said, pray for those in power over us. Their temptation to fulfil selfish desire is great, and turning against them when they need our support and prayer will just worsen the situation. If and when the time comes that they are "beyond help", seeing only desire and sin, and leading all who follow them into complete disobediance towards God, then and only then do we remove ourselves from under their authority. All in my opinion, of course...
