| Disciple | Alarming Realities To what extent does religion affect our lives? Is it merely confined to moral aspects, societal issues, and fellowship with our neighbors? In the very first book of the Bible no less did God already entrust to us the care of the world. According to Genesis 1:26 : "Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.", we are to be the caretakers of all His creations on earth. He placed us in charge of His creations, from the smallest to the largest, from the simplest to the most complex. But sad to say, society has long neglected this important task. Movements are shaping up only now that we have realized how adversely our ill-decided actions are shaping the world. The past months have been filled with news of death, of war, of epidemics, of freak hurricanes and violent acts of nature that have shaken the world. Thousands have died from landslides, strong hurricanes, earthquakes, flash floods and other events out of man’s control. Each time an incident is reported, scientists all over the world speak about global warming; each time an incident is reported, the warnings go largely unheeded. And the cycle continues… TIME Magazine has recently devoted an issue to global warming and how ordinary citizens can pitch in. Several stories have sprung up on the issue too, prompting concerned people around the globe to finally spring into action. Christians have to actively take part as well, being stewards of God’s creations. Not all of us are blessed with enough resources to contribute to large-scale projects, but simple tasks can offset the effects of global warming sufficiently enough if a large group of people work together. Conserving, recycling, reducing waste, planting trees, and limiting use of non-biodegradable materials and non-environment-friendly products can still make a dent to decelerate the rate of destruction on our planet. Here is TIME's 51 ways to help. Meanwhile, spread the message to others to finally reverse the havoc we have done all these years. |
