Edit Prophet/Prophetess ![]() | Linux/C++ Compiler I would like to try Linux on my Mac, but I have no idea what the best version is. Anyone know? And, if anyone knows of a good (free?) C++ Compiler that will also run on a Mac, let me know? Any help would be great. Thanks. ![]()

Edit Prophet/Prophetess ![]() | what kind of mac do you have? i know mac os x is built on unix so any version of linux should work for that, other than that i don;t know. and my favourite C/ C++ compiler for all unix distribs is gcc, not sure where you can find it though, try a google search. i currently am running ubuntu linux ona dual boot with windows, but i have cygwin on the windows side, so if i decide to do anything unix style i can!

Edit Prophet/Prophetess ![]() | I have Mac OS X 10.2.8 For the Compiler, I was wondering if there was one for Mac.. Sorry I wasn't clear on that. Is Red Hat (right name? lol) any good? I got a book from the library on it, but what's the difference between that and all the other Linux versions?

Edit Prophet/Prophetess ![]() | AFAIK, Red hat linux is one of the most popular versions of Linux, it actually got commercialized. (Its like $50). All the other versions are free, pretty much. But I could be totally off, so Im hoping w.e.g. will shed some light there. Also, Will, Im thinking about setting up dual-boot with Windows & Linux. I would really appreciate your help. Think we can IM sometime?

Edit Prophet/Prophetess ![]() | Yeah, you're right. Red Hat linux used to be pretty popular until they started charging for it. The Fedora project is the free project that basically picked up where the last free version of Red Hat left off. My current personal favorite is Ubuntu, but there are a lot of good distobutions of linux out there right now. They're all pretty similar, but some may work better for your particular hardware, etc. Setting up a dual-boot system isn't too hard, but one word of caution for you... if you plan on mainly booting to linux, let it do the typical installation when it gets to writing the GRUB or LILO boot loader, because it will make itself the default choice. If you don't want linux to be the default choice you can change the order, or even set it up so that you have to boot off a floppy or something to get linux to come up. I don't use c++ compilers outside of windows, but a great free one for windows is devc++. |

Edit Prophet/Prophetess ![]() | yea ubuntu has a great installer it even shrinks your windows partition for you! Red Hat is great but you have to pay for it now which is kinda lame and against the vision of the initial linux founders, but there are lots of others, try and find one that uses a shell that you know, or can find a book on. if any one wants to IM about this stuff feel free to add me.

Edit Prophet/Prophetess ![]() | My mum has a Mac and my brother got her Debian for that. Not sure which Mac it was though (Too many now adays) As for C++ I don't really have a compiler since I use Visual Basic but G++ may work.
