Planning a Techie Career?

Just wondering how many people are looking at maybe starting a career in the tech field. If you are, what events led you to an interest in this type of career?

I'm going to major in information systems. I always liked computers and making programs but I didn't want to do the math and code of a computer science major. I don't like math.

Anyways I kind of like buisness and my counselours said that infomatins systems was the middle between the two.

I'll talk to you later, ordering books for 2nd semester now.

Peace

Yes, but not sure on what. lol That is if my "music" doesn't fall through.

I'm thinking Software or Database. We'll see what happens...

I voted for all 4, lol, but I want to specialize in networking/programming. Maybe database...or hardware... Im not sure. Reason why I voted all 4 is because most of the time I see it all ties in together.

For example, at the moment I am attempting to program a simple multi-player game, mostly as a self-teaching tool.

Throught development, so far I have needed:

1. Obviusly, the programming knowledge.
2. Basic Database knowledge to keep tracks of current sessions opened or closed. (I used MySQL)
3. A basic Networking knowledge. Knowing how DHCP works, setting up more than 1 router, and also a good knowledge of TCP/IP, (as this is the protocol I chose).

I wont include #4 which would be the graphics in the game because I will not be doing them, but my point is someitmes you need to know a little of each. But as you wrote to me in a PM, Chase, on should specialize in 1 area... right now it is probably programming, yet at the same time Im struggling selecting one particular area for future studying since I enjoy it all so well. Maybe I should base it on a financial view, since I pretty much enjoy it all equally.

Im open to advice.

I ticked everything on that list apart from the "no" option.

I plan to have a great career in that. An IT for a company or something.

I checked SW Development. I've done a little of that, nothing large-scale yet, that's the goal of the coming summer's internship/job thing. I do have a couple leads, so we'll see where it all plays out.

I'm like you - I hate math, but I love logic. My hobby is sculpting and ceramics. I love working with my hands. My older brother is a computer geek to the n'th degree. As I watched him play around with simple programming, I began to see the close relationship between art and development. I could work with my hands, develop a piece of digital art, but actually make money! So I began taking every computer science course the local junior college would offer (I probably took Calculus 1 about four times).

So as you see, I came to Software Development from a completely different perspective than your sterotypical math nerd. The math knowledge might not have come naturally for me, but it came eventually. And now I do a lot of user interface design, software architecture, and business model logic, and a little math from time to time (but I usually dish that boring junk off to the newbies ).
