Quick ethics question.

Is it sin if you steal (say, rob a bank) and give it all away?

stealing is stealing is stealing is stealing...it doesn't matter what you do with the money...it's not yours

well, yeah.. breaking one of the 10 commandments - no stealing..

and what's so "good" bout giving it all away anyway? if your motive is not right before God, you think he cares if you feed the poor or something anyway?

How is the motive not right before God? It is a good thing to help those less fortunate than you. The motive in doing that wouldn't be bad, it would be good. The action would be wrong because it is still taking something that is not yours(stealing). However, it isn't the motive that was bad unless your motive wasn't to give it to the poor.

I heard a talk about how God will judge our lives after our bodies die, about how he will judge on the basis of conscience, conduct, and character.
In this situation, I think that you might be ok in conscience or character, but the action (conduct) would be wrong.
8th commandment says stealing is wrong, of course, but God does care about the motives of our hearts, too. He's awesome like that

remember that story when saul didn't obey God and said he was going to use the animals for sacrifice? and God said that he likes OBEDIENCE better than SACRIFICE. that's kinda like stealing to give it away...I think God would rather you OBEY him and not steal than disobey and do something "good" with what you stole...

still wrong you took something that's not yours and by giving it to other people they are in a sense stealing without knowing it because they are taking something from someone who it really isn't there's to be giving away.

We won't help the poor, and turn our faces in shame when we come across the needy and less fortunate But we'll still call ourselves "holy" because we keep our pants zipped up.
