Hypocrisy

There's a little girl across the street,
Empty eyes and a torn dress
Hanging from a thin frame.
At night you hear the cries,
Screams piercing the velvet black
Of your peaceful slumber.
Undertones of soft sobbing
And loud shouting
Push through your locked door.
You bury your head beneath the covers,
Trying to block this little girl's plea.
You can't see the wild, bloodshot eyes,
Smell the breath, stained with alcohol.
You don't feel the weight
Of a drunken man's hand
On frail shoulders,
As he steals her innocence
Over
and over
and over again.
You pretend not to hear,
Not to see smashed glass
And bruised arms.
Turning your eyes away,
Ignoring the call
To love a girl
Who's never been protected.

There's a homeless man on the corner
Of a gas station and a grocery store,
He stands there,
Rags
And years of exposure
Sit like a weight upon his starving body.
He jingles his last resort
In a dirty paper cup,
Holding a cardboard sign.
You walk past like you do
Morning after morning,
Pretending not to see his sunken eyes
And ribs protruding
Through torn clothing.
The distant sound of his cracked voice
And the plink of coins bouncing in his cup
Wash over your ears,
And you turn your back on him
Once again.

"Freak"
"Weirdo"
Floating down the halls,
Following her.
She walks alone,
Head down, frail shoulders sagging
Under the weight of her loneliness.
You caught her eye once,
Walking down the hall with people fluttering around,
You quickly looked away.
Disgusted,
You turn up your nose at her scars,
Her dark eye shadow surrounding
Empty eyes.
You giggle with your friends,
Your plastic life reflected in gleaming eyes.
You wear a silver cross,
But you don't seem to remember that
As you point and laugh.
She walks home,
Shuts the door to her room
And the tears fall once again.
You're on the phone,
Laughing at her strange clothes
And gossiping about the scratches
She couldn't explain.
She picks up that razor,
makes one last cut.
Sinking into the darkness,
Her pain is finally gone.
Just a smudge on your perfect life.

You won't ever know
What a smile can do,
A word,
A prayer.
You drop 10% in the offering plate,
Memorize your verses.
But do you see their hollow eyes?
Do you feel their hunger,
Understand their suffering?
Hypocrisy stains your soul,
You cover it up with charity and smiles.
There is One who sees through your lies,
Looking straight at your heart...
One who loves those you shun.
Will you answer His call?

wow that was really good! the sad part about it is, its mostly right i guess sometimes even though we talk about helping out ppl etc. its a lot harder then it seems, we know if Jesus was hear, He would be out helping them, we really have no excuse, except for the excuses we make to make us feel better about it i guess.if we cant do anything physically for them though, we can at least pray, cause they say that Prayer is the most powerful thing on earth. and hopefully one day, there will be peace among diff people. God Bless, and thank u for sharing your poem.

Wow what a poem. Sad but true. Do you mind if I share that with my youth group once we get it started. A few of the older teens need to hear that?
